The Healing Powers of Nature to Inspire Creativity

Interview by: Melody Lipford

Interview with Harriet Palmer from Ninety-Five Prints

Home of Passion’s contributing writer and junior editor, Melody Lipford had the pleasure of connecting with product designer and fellow creative, Harriet Palmer.

Harriet co-runs a full-service design and screenprint studio, Ninety-Five Prints. Along with her designer friend, Sunnie– they offer t-shirt printing, design services, paper prints, and more.

Melody stumbled upon their insanely aesthetic instagram account @ninetyfiveprints which features their amazing original prints and designs, along with fun appearances by their dog and fellow mascot, Bailey-D.

We enjoyed learning about their creative process! And HoP is excited to share with you their uplifting and positive perspectives in this Q&A.

What was the inspiration behind creating your product?

Our inspiration for these posters was the joy of gardening that we and so many others have found this year in lockdown. It’s something we found ourselves getting into anyway we could, even isolating in tiny flats. We talked to so many friends doing the same, and as an all female studio, we always love to root for each other!

How long did it take to create the product or to figure out the product design?

It took a few weeks to design each poster. Then, just a few days to produce the runs. Once we start printing we love pushing through to get them done in one night if we can! It’s the most fun part of creating our prints, we get to work hard and pull together.

How has mental health awareness influenced your product design?

This year especially we’ve tried to make sure each other in the studio and our friends are doing ok.  We’ve always believed in the importance of a happy, calm, and positive environment to live and work in. As a group of colleagues and friends, we always try to help and support each other, and we loved being able to combine these two aspects in these positive messages.

We tried to create visually calming beautiful artwork with messages we can see ourselves saying to each other!

What is your goal related to mental health through the creation of this product?

Our goal was to create beautiful prints with fun positive messages, to replicate the empowering, supportive atmosphere we always try to create in our studio, and really feel it helps people be their best. We always want to cheer each other on!

Has artwork and product design become a way to help your mental health in your own personal life?

We’re very lucky to be able to do what we love as a design studio everyday, but even that can feel like hard work. Making sure we spend as much time as possible as a team working with our hands together as friends always helps us relax, open up our creativity and feel positive.

What is one piece of advice you gave for anyone who is interested in creating art and who would also like to create a product?

Keep trying! If you feel stuck just make what’s in your head, even if you don’t like what comes out, the process of making mistakes will always help get you to what you want. And make sure it’s a theme you love and have fun with it!

What’s the most challenging part about creating your art?

Trusting ourselves and making sure to enjoy the process and remember what it’s for.

What’s the most rewarding part about creating your art?

Seeing the final product just as we wanted it, or even better than we could imagine and seeing other people appreciate our work. We love seeing how people live with our prints.

Why or how do you believe there are healing powers in nature? Have you experienced this personally along with others in your life?

However big or small your daily experience with nature is an amazing way to stay grounded when things feel out of control.

Is there anything else you would like to add or share about upcoming projects or to this conversation in general?

Just that we loved the process of making these prints. It was a great simple but powerful brief we loved working on. We want to be making more and more prints like this next year, and expanding our artwork and designs to other products. And most importantly, keep positive and keep rooting for each other!

We want to thank Harriet and Sunnie for letting us learn more about their creative process and for sharing their uplifting positive perspectives. You are an inspiration for all who stumble across your company!

We look forward to seeing more of the amazing designs and prints Ninety-Five Prints creates! As well as all the adorable cameos of your dog, Bailey-D on your Instagram. They are sure to brighten up anyone’s day!

We hope to see your continued success from the positive outlet you bring through your art and overall work in the creative community.

About author: Melody lipford

I grew up in the United States, specifically in the Appalachian Mountains. I grew up with humble beginnings and always strived to be the first one in my family to graduate college. As a recent college graduate of Emory & Henry College, it is safe to say I achieved that goal.

However, my adolescence and college years were not free of anxiety and depression that comes not only with that goal, but also were mental illnesses I had suffered from since childhood. Through it all,  I have learned self-care and have strived to use my love of writing to break the stigmas that encompass such a common subject such as mental health.

I look forward to doing this at Home of Passion and invite readers to start this discussion in their own lives. Let’s end the stigma together.
