Travel Guide: The Best of Bali

Written by: Camilla Liedecke

This summer I graduated from university after five-years of study. Can you imaging how much I needed to take some time off and do absolutely nothing before starting working full-time. Yeah YOU ARE RIGHT; I did actually count the days for this year’s family vacation. My parents invited the entire family to Bali, so off we went, and WAAAUUW – magical it was!

I hope everyone will have the oppotunity to experience the magic of Bali– and for this reason,
I have collected my best tips and insightful recommendations for you, my dear.

Where to stay:

During our Bali visit, we stayed at The Bandha Hotel & Suites. The hotel is located in Kuta, which is one of the busiest areas on the island which provides many opportunities to explore and do a lot of fun activities together. The Bandha Hotel & Suites offers the most  peaceful and relaxing surroundings – and not to forget, the best hotel beds and linens I have ever tried– making it SO incredibly difficult to get out of bed in the morning! But only  until you remember the hotel’s breakfast buffet overlooking the ocean. All in all, there is no doubt that this hotel is worth a visit if you are looking for some time to relax in the most luxurious settings.

What to experience:

You simply cannot visit Bali without noticing modern westeren culture merging with  traditional hindu customs and lifestyle – whether you choose to stroll down the beach or go window shop the many interesting boutiques.  To fully experience the native culture and the old traditions I  recommend hiring a taxi driver for a day. It will cost you approximately 750,000 Indonesia Rupiah. We were fortunate to hire  a local Balinese man who showed us around the island. He was born and raised in Denpasar, Bali so he knew all the best spots to take us and educate us about  the local customs.

On our tour we visited an array of ancient temples, each and everyone of them so special. My favorite one is the Tirta Empul. It  is one of the largest water temples in Bali, and the temple’s holy water is believed to be used for purification rituals. Please remember to respect this when visiting.

Apart from the many temples, Bali is also well-known for  beautiful rice terraces , and no other place is as well renowned for this than Ubud. Ubud is a few hours drive from Denpasar, but anyone who has visited Ubud and seen the picturesque rice-fields will say the drive is well  worth it.

If you find  yourself in the area, you will want to visit  the Merta Harum Agro Plantation as well. This place is amazing and a fun experience.  You will see the local crops and fruits– as well as see how the famous Kopi Luwak coffee is made. By the end of the guided tour, you can buy all sorts of local products at the coffee farmhouse. We bought  a lot of goodies, such as various teas, spices, and coffee beans. So Yummy!

I hope this guide has been helpful in some way or another, ’cause exploring Bali is really worth it!

NICE TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  1. The best time to visit Bali is during the island’s dry season, May to October

  2. Book a private driver who can take you everywhere you want to go. It is an inexpensive way to experience the island

  3. Try to learn a bit   about the Hindu culture before visiting Bali. It  will help you to better understand all their everyday rituals.
