10 DIY Home Beauty Treatments to Add a Fresh Pep to Your Step

Written by: Hannah Stephenson

DIY beauty treatments are the best. They’re cheap, easy, and don’t require forking out a small fortune at the salon. We’ve put together this list of the best DIY beauty treatments to have you feeling like a brand new woman. No pricey products here, just all-natural ingredients already sitting in your kitchen cabinets! Get stuck in for the night on a DIY beauty kick with these 10 best treatments.

Cinnamon Lip Plumper

Full pouts are all the rage nowadays– thanks to Kylie Jenner. Plumping glosses are flying off the shelves, but they don’t come cheap. Fortunately, you’ve already got everything you need to achieve the ‘bee-sting’  look in your spice cabinet. I started using this recipe a few years ago, and I will never go back to those overpriced glosses. I keep a small aluminium tin in my handbag so I can plump up on the go.

Ingredients: Two parts cinnamon powder to one part Vaseline (or coconut oil, if you prefer).

Method: Mix the cinnamon and Vaseline together in a small bowl. Apply the formula to your lips and leave on for five minutes. Wipe it off with a tissue and follow with a moisturizing balm. Voila — Angelina Jolie, is that you?

Honey & Lemon Sugar Lip Scrub

Ugh, is there anything worse than dry lips? Besides feeling super uncomfortable, they leave your most expensive lipstick looking patchy and weird. A lip scrub is just the ticket to transform your pout from cracked to super-kissable in a matter of minutes.

Ingredients: 2 tbsp sugar, 2 tsp lemon juice and 2 tsp honey

Method: Mix the lemon and honey together in a bowl. Add the sugar a little at a time and stir to form a thick paste. Apply to your lips using your fingertip and scrub gently in a small circular motion. Rinse with warm water and add some hydrating lip balm to finish. Mwah!

Radiant Facial Massage

You don’t have to go to the spa for a super-relaxing facial massage. Our DIY method will leave you feeling blissfully laid back, with uber-glowy skin to boot.

Massaging your face regularly improves circulation and stimulates your muscles, leading to firm younger-looking skin. It also helps your moisturizer penetrate deeper skin layers, leaving you hydrated and fresh. This is one of my favorite at-home treatments, because it lessens the frown lines on my forehead (the result of too much squinting!)

Method: Wash your hands — and wash them very well! Dirty mitts can lead to breakouts.

Once your paws are clean, place your fingertips on your brows and gently push up, working your way to the scalp. Repeat this motion ten times. Remember to only go upwards– pulling skin down can cause it to sag.

Next, take your index and middle fingers and place them on your temples. Massage in small circular motions, and work in towards the bridge of your nose. When you reach the bridge of your nose, apply a little more pressure to prevent the formation of ‘11’ lines. Repeat three times.

Bring your fingertips into the side of your nose and gently work out towards your ears, moving in small circular motions. Repeat three times.

Finally, massage your jaw with five up-and-out motions and enjoy your glowing skin!

Pore-MINIMIZING Baking Soda & Honey Mask

Baking soda is the perfect solution to enlarged pores– due to it’s exfoliant and anti-inflammatory. Combine it with the complexion-boosting power of honey, and you’ll have model-worthy glass skin in no time. Both ingredients are also antiseptic, so this mask could prove beneficial if you’re affected by acne.

This mask is a godsend if you want to achieve that glass-skin look for a special occasion. I apply it to my pores and forehead a few hours before I start getting ready and follow it up with plenty of moisturizer.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp honey and ½ tsp baking soda

Method: Mix the baking soda and honey together in your hands to warm up the honey. Apply the mask to clean dry skin. Massage it in with small circular motions and leave on for 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry.

Green Tea Face Toner

Green tea has long been hailed as a superfood– or should that be superdrink? It’s anti-inflammatory and packed with antioxidants, so it’s basically the equivalent of a kale smoothie for your skin. Toners can be expensive, but this simple DIY recipe works just as well in combating acne and under-eye puffiness– yes please!

Ingredients: 250 ml green tea, 15 ml lemon juice, 30 drops of tea tree oil

Method: Prepare 250 ml of green tea and leave to cool for one hour. Stir in the lemon juice and tea tree oil. Wash your face and apply the toner to dry skin using a cotton ball or spray bottle. Avoid your eyes! Repeat this twice daily after cleansing for healthier looking skin.

Coconut Oil & Avocado Hair Mask

Millennials are obsessed with coconut oil and avocado– for good reason. They’re DIY beauty staples, and together they make one heck of a hair mask. This hydrating solution will leave your hair looking glossier than a Pantene girl.

Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado (mashed) and 2 tbsp coconut oil.

Method: Gently melt the coconut oil in a bowl, add the avocado, and combine until they form a creamy mixture. Apply the mask to wet hair from root to tip, comb through, and wrap hair in a towel to avoid mess. Leave on for 15-30 minutes, then wash out thoroughly.

Beer Conditioning Hair Treatment

The ladies of yore were said to use beer to get thick glossy hair, and if it worked for them– why not us too? Thanks to its abundance of fortifying minerals, beer shampoos are cropping up left, right, and centre. But why spend your hard-earned cash on a fancy bottle when you can just grab a can from the fridge?

Obviously, washing your hair with beer every day would get costly, but it’s a cheap alternative to a deep conditioning treatment at the salon.

Ingredients: One can of your favorite brew

Method: The beer works its magic best when flat, so pour it into a jug and let it sit for a couple of hours, or whisk it for 5-10 minutes to speed up the process. Shampoo your hair as normal, then instead of reaching for the conditioner, pour the flat beer onto your head, and massage it slowly into your  roots. Leave in for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Lemon Juice Highlights

Craving those sun-kissed highlights, but don’t have the funds to splurge on a trip to the salon or a Caribbean cruise? Never fear– there’s a simple solution hiding in the fruit bowl.

As a natural redhead, I discovered this one at a young age when I was desperate to be a blonde. It didn’t quite have the peroxide effect (thank god), but it did give me some fresh, summery highlights.

Ingredients: 5-10 lemons, water

Method: Cut the lemons in half and squeeze, then add water to achieve a ratio of 2:1 lemon-water. Filter through a sieve and transfer to a spray bottle. Spray the mixture into your hair, or use a cotton ball or spoolie for a more precise application. The lemons are at their most powerful when you’re sitting in the sun, so go outdoors for an hour or two if you can. After a few hours, rinse your hair, and deep condition for good measure. Repeat daily until you’ve achieved your desired shade.

Coffee Ground Body Scrub

It’s no secret that coffee is a miracle-worker when it comes to productivity, but did you know it’s also the key to baby-soft skin? Exfoliating with coffee grounds can help to combat rough bumpy skin, AND bonus– the caffeine stimulates blood flow, reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Ingredients: 5 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp coffee grounds.

Method: Mix the ingredients together and scrub away– simple! You can apply with a mitt or shower puff if you prefer.

Coconut Oil & Baking Soda Teeth Whitening Treatment

Celebs like Gwenyth Paltrow swear by the ‘oil pulling’ method– swilling coconut oil around in your mouth for twenty minutes to whiten teeth. The fatty acids help remove stains on those pearly whites and helps prevent tooth decay as well.

Baking soda, meanwhile, is an alkaline, which makes it an effective whitening agent. In fact, it can be found in many popular toothpaste brands! Combine these two magic ingredients together and you’ll be smiling wider (and whiter) than ever.

Ingredients: 6 tbsp coconut oil, 6 tbsp baking soda

Method: Gently heat the coconut oil in a bowl and mix in the baking soda to form a paste. Take a small amount and apply to your teeth, leave on for 15 minutes. Store the rest in an airtight container and repeat daily.

There you have it folks– the best DIY treatments that will leave you feeling salon-fresh for a fraction of the cost. Lock the doors, put on some soothing music, and settle in for a DIY at home spa day that your skin, hair, and especially your wallet will love.

Hi, I’m Hannah, an avid travel blogger and self-proclaimed beauty addict with zero chance of recovery. I grew up in Cambridge, England, a place I’m still very much in love with even though I don’t spend much time there anymore!

I taught English in Vietnam for two years, and the experience challenged me in ways I had never imagined possible. I’ve always been reasonably confident, but I grappled with body image to the point where it began to hold me back. Anxiety and loneliness were my constant companions for the first six months or so.

Consequently, I feel passionate about body positivity in all of its various forms. I don’t think that wanting to feel good in your own skin is vanity– it’s something that everyone deserves. I also realize more than ever how important open honest conversations about mental health are needed.
