How to Build a Positive Mindset After Rejection

By: Vanessa Carrillo

Rejection hurts, and it affects us all in different ways. Maybe you were pursuing a new job, trying to make new friends, or you went out on a few dates, and for any number of reasons these things didn’t work out.

You put in all this effort, got your hopes up, and now you feel crushed. It can be hard to bounce back when you feel like you gave your best, yet it wasn’t good enough. But that doesn’t mean you should give up! After all, you can’t expect to make progress if you throw in the towel too early. You must push forward!

Here are a few ways to push forward in a positive manner.

Acknowledge the Rainbow of Emotions

Allow the bad emotions to exist. It’s best to acknowledge your frustrations and disappointments instead of trying to bury them. When you face the feelings head on, you take control of them. Recognize that these bad feelings may emerge at any time, and that they can take control of your motivation if you let them.

As humans, we’re able to feel complex emotions. While they may not all be pleasant, they are all part of our human experience. Having the expectation to always be happy is unrealistic. Accepting that you feel down, and pushing forward despite this is where true strength is found.

Positive Affirmations

Remind yourself of your value. You are what you think, so be kind to yourself! Start by getting a small piece of paper. Write down a few positive affirmations that you can begin speaking aloud today. When you speak positive phrases into existence, they can become your reality.

Display these affirmations on your wall, at your desk, in your planner– anywhere where you will see it everyday to get a friendly reminder from yourself of how amazing you are.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • I am imperfect, and that’s ok
  • I believe in myself
  • I am loveable
  • I work hard for what I want
  • I am attracting my dream future
  • I won’t give up

Build the habit of speaking your positive affirmations aloud. If you find yourself ignoring the written statements, change its location! You want these phrases to catch your attention and remind you of your goals.

Be Your Own Hype Person

Make a list of your best qualities, moments you were proud of yourself, moments where others were proud of you, and so on. Remember, this is for YOU. It’s better to write with the intention of not sharing this with others. This will allow you to be open, honest, and vulnerable.

Write down any positive attributes that come to mind, no matter how frivolous they might seem. Here are a few examples:

  • I taught myself a new skill
  • I always hold the door open for others
  • My friends come to me for advice
  • I make awesome spaghetti
  • I’m a Scrabble master
  • I made someone smile today

All of this writing is to remind yourself why you are awesome and why you deserve to put your best foot forward, no matter how hard it gets. You must be your number-one cheerleader, so pump yourself up!

While you’re writing, you may notice a voice in your head telling you not to write something so positive and confident. Is your inner-saboteur distracting you from loving yourself? Let those feelings out too. Remember, you want to acknowledge all of your feelings. Writing can be a therapeutic way to express emotions and thoughts that are clogging up your mental space. Allow yourself to have a free-flow release of thoughts.

Life Lessons

Learn something from the rejection. Rejection is proof that you’re putting yourself out there, and stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s an incredible feat to push beyond your limits and go for something you really want. If you never get rejected, you’re probably playing it safe, and that won’t help you reach for big goals.

One way to learn from rejection is to take a lesson away from it. Rejected from a job? Send a courteous email asking for feedback on what you could work on for future interviews. Rejected by a new love interest? Take yourself out on a date! Learning to love yourself is immensely important, and you should focus on this before seeking out love and security from others.

 Search for Silver Linings

Can you think of any past failures that ended up having a positive outcome? Maybe a relationship didn’t work out, but then you had more time to connect with your friends, family, and yourself. Perhaps you didn’t get into a school or program you had your heart set on, but your second option ended up being an incredible experience. The key to finding silver linings is to believe that you can and will have valuable life experiences even though your original plans didn’t work out. A positive mindset yields positive results!

Do your absolute best to not let rejection derail you from your goals. Keep your momentum going, and always remember to be kind to yourself with friendly reminders and positive affirmations. You are valuable. You are resilient. You will work hard. You will prosper. You’ve got this!
