April: Weird Times!

By: Laura Wainer

Dear you,

I have been meaning to write this letter for a while now. Things are wild with the pandemic spreading and affecting the whole world; everywhere you turn people are talking about it. Every TV  channel, the radio, websites– there is no ignoring it. I want Home of Passion to be a positive environment, and I want to talk about how I am trying my best to use this lockdown for some good. However, I do not think we can talk about the positive side without acknowledging how scary this whole situation is. People are dying and the importance of following the guidelines given to us by the government cannot be stressed enough. We need to take care of one another this time around by taking time to ourselves and not socializing.

In Denmark, the government has created packages to help different kinds of businesses out, trying to help them survive this tough period without having to fire everyone or completely shut down. This means I am home without work for the next while. Obviously, I come from a very privileged country, in hard times we come together, and the government is doing everything they can to support and help everyone. Hospitals are free and there is a helping hand to find if you need it. Not every country has that, and I truly appreciate the fact that we do.

I cannot begin to imagine what it is like for the people with sick family members or friends. My experience is different, and I am lucky that my family is safe and healthy so far. I am struggling with guilt from knowing how many are going through unimaginable hard times, while I am here enjoying the quietness. However, guilt has never helped anyone, and there is nothing other than following the guidelines given that I can do to help at this moment.

I know that times are hard on many, one reason might be that so many of us are used to feeling accomplished due to having busy schedules. It is very common to rely your worth on being busy and doing stuff all the time. This means it hits hard when all social events, work, fitness, and café visits must be cancelled for a while. It leaves us alone with our thoughts and feelings, and  as a friend of mine expressed– a lot of time to reflect.

I am lucky to have many hobbies, a dog, a boyfriend, preparing  for a new family member, and I have Home of Passion to spend my time on. I  recommend spending some time to be creative, bake that cake you have been fantasizing about or do your own nails in a fancy color. Don’t just sit back and feel like you cannot accomplish anything! Maybe there is a subject at work, or a hobby you are struggling with, find an online course, or read that book that  has been collecting dust for months if not years now. There is so much to do, and just because your regular day has been turned off, it does not mean you have to sit back and do nothing at all. Try to focus on the things you can do rather than what you cannot.

More than anything I would recommend that you truly take this time as a break, a time to focus on you. Time to reflect, to not just be in forward mode, but truly consider what is it you want from life. This difficult time can function as a reminder to us all, that we only have the now. So, whatever you want to accomplish, work on it now! Don’t wait for things to happen, make them happen!

I will be listening to some podcasts, reading some books, and spending time reflecting and creating a vision board. There is so much to do, and I am the only one limiting myself. Let’s all spend this time to grow and learn and hopefully we can all meet on the other side and create more positive impacts and change the world for the better with our new focus and energy!

I hope you are all safe and taking care of your mind and body during these challenging times.

Best Regards,
